The Importance of Winter Protection & Burlapping

One of the biggest challenges of winter property maintenance is protecting landscape plants from the harsh conditions created by snow and ice management. While snow removal and de-icing are essential for safety, they can also have a significant impact on the health of your landscape.

One of the most effective ways to protect vulnerable plants is through winter burlapping. Burlap creates a protective barrier that shields shrubs and evergreens from salt spray, wind, and the weight of snow while still allowing the plants to breathe. This simple preventative measure can significantly reduce winter damage and help plants emerge healthy in the spring.

What Needs to be Burlapped

1. Young or Newly Planted Evergreens: Cedars, boxwoods, and other evergreen conifers typically require one to two years to establish a strong root system after planting. During this establishment period, they are more susceptible to winter burn caused by cold winds and drying conditions. Burlapping helps protect these plants while they become established.

2. Tender Deciduous Trees: Trees such as Japanese Maples that are planted in exposed or windy locations should be wrapped to protect them from harsh winter conditions. Younger trees are especially vulnerable to bark damage, winter burn, and branch dieback, making winter protection a worthwhile investment.

3. Plants Near Roads or Sidewalks: Evergreens and shrubs located beside roads, parking lots, driveways, or sidewalks are continually exposed to salt spray and runoff throughout the winter. Burlapping provides a protective barrier that helps prevent salt damage, reducing the need for costly plant replacements.

When Should I Have My Burlapping Done?

Burlap installation can often be a game of finding the perfect timing for the work to be completed. If you burlap too early you can trap moisture inside with the plants, causing mold to grow and spread. If you burlap too late you risk being caught by an unexpected snow storm. Timing needs to be perfect so that it is cold enough to avoid the risk of mold but warm enough so that there hasn’t been a major snowfall and the ground is not yet frozen.

In the spring, burlap removal needs to be done as the weather changes. Once the threat of frost and snow is over it is important to remove the burlap in a timely fashion so the plants can continue to grow.
